Esther and Stanley's story: Real emotions, a journey from Alaska to the Caribbean, and why Kukua is the perfect canvas for your destination wedding in the Dominican Republic.

How does a love story start at a party in Alaska, lead to an engagement in a restaurant in Korea, and culminate on the shores of the Caribbean? Only Esther and Stanley know the magic behind that journey.

When they first told me their story from their home in Oregon, I knew their wedding would be something rare. Stanley, who is part Dominican and born in New York, was returning to his roots for the first time since childhood. Esther, a vibrant extrovert born in California to a Korean family, saw this as the perfect opportunity for her loved ones to experience a new culture.

As an editorial photographer, my approach is very curated, but the most important thing will always be emotions over posing. But true curation goes beyond lighting and composition; it starts by understanding who is in front of the lens. Knowing that Stanley is a calm, introverted former military man who feels shy in front of cameras, and that Esther is a former photographer herself who loves soaking in the energy of people, changed how I approached their day. Choosing Kukua Beach Club as their venue provided the perfect, private blank canvas to let their unique dynamic flow effortlessly.

Everything You Need to Know About Kukua Beach Club Weddings

If you are researching venues and want to step away from the traditional massive all-inclusive resorts, Kukua Restaurant & Beach Club is a private paradise. Strategically located on the beautiful white sands of Bavaro Beach, this establishment stands out for offering total exclusivity on your wedding day.

For couples looking to curate an unforgettable experience, here are a few key things that make Kukua shine:

The Spaces: They feature a private beach, a stunning indigo pool, indoor salons, and their famous "La Palapa"—a gorgeous beachfront thatched-roof structure that works for elegant sand-free ceremonies or as the perfect Plan B if the weather shifts.

Total Comfort: They offer an air-conditioned bridal suite where the bride can get ready comfortably, plus a dedicated space for the groom.

Pricing and Customization: The in-house design team makes curating your day from afar completely stress-free. Kukua is highly adaptable; space rental fees are around $1,000 USD, and depending on your guest count and vision, a complete wedding can range from an intimate budget to a luxury event of $15,000 - $20,000 USD with top-tier gastronomy and free of vendor fees so you can arrange your wedding vision to life!

The Getting Ready: Intimate Details and Soft Light

The morning started in Kukua's bridal suite, filled with Esther's radiant energy. As someone who draws happiness from being around her people, her room was full of life. I documented the textures artistically: her rings, her long-sleeve dress, and her soft beach waves, curating each detail using a 35mm film aesthetic to give it a warm, nostalgic feel.

Meanwhile, Stanley was getting ready in his own room, going over his vows. Despite his tough exterior, he is deeply caring and passionate. I wanted to capture his serene silence, giving him the space to just breathe without the pressure of forced smiles.

The First Look & A Beachfront Ceremony

If there is one instant that defines our philosophy, it was their first look. We often expect the groom to be the one to cry, but it was Esther who couldn't hold back her tears. It was a raw, honest moment, completely unscripted.

For the ceremony, the Caribbean weather surprised us with a soft rain. The transition to the covered areas was immediate and elegant. The sound of the water falling in the background as they shared their first kiss, paired with the moody light, gave the ceremony the intentional, intimate atmosphere of a private art exhibit.

Portrait Session: Nostalgic Light and "Emotions Over Posing"

Because they previously had a somewhat awkward photoshoot experience in Korea, my priority was to make sure Stanley felt completely at ease. After the rain stopped, we walked out to the wet sand. Instead of forcing static poses, I simply asked them to walk and enjoy being newlyweds.

The result was a curated gallery of clean, timeless images. The contrast of Stanley's calm presence in his clean linen suit with Esther's lively spirit and pastel bouquet created a true work of art.

Reception: Two Cultures, One Celebration

The reception was a sensory feast where two worlds met. The decor followed a beautifully curated botanical vibe. Guests absolutely loved the "Ring Bar": ringing a small bell to be served a drink through a stunning wall of foliage.

After an exquisite dinner and a first dance full of quiet glances, the energy exploded. The "Hora Loca" brought all the color and rhythm of the Dominican Carnival to the dance floor, blending perfectly with the joyful, outgoing nature of Esther's family. It was the perfect ending to a day of beautiful contrasts.

A Note for Couples Planning a Resort Wedding in the Dominican Republic

Choosing a venue that offers absolute privacy gives you the freedom to let go of control. My biggest advice: trust your team, let the day flow, and stay present. When a photographer takes the time to truly know your story, your photos won't just look like a beautiful collection—they will be a timeless piece of art with a soul.
