A Secret Proposal in Samaná among dogs: The Emotions of Amado & Joanna Story | Punta Cana & Dominican Republic Wedding Photographer
Two single parents, a seven-year journey, and the Caribbean breeze.
There is a very specific shift that happens when someone reaches out and knows exactly what they value.
From my very first video call with Amado, I knew it. He wasn’t looking for just another photographer to take pretty pictures in Punta Cana. He was looking for someone capable of documenting the real, unfiltered weight of his story. He connected instantly with the core of my visual approach.
Emotions over posing.
Theirs is one of those stories that simply stays with you. Amado and Joanna met in 2018, balancing life as single parents between New York and New Jersey. Both had been on their own for exactly two years. Healing. Making space for the exact moment their paths would finally cross.
They weren't just building a romance. They were gathering the missing pieces of their family.
He brings this loud, expansive energy. She brings an effortless, quiet confidence. Together, they blended their lives and their two daughters into a beautifully chaotic, intentional dynamic.
Seven years of deep conversations and long distances. A long-awaited family trip to the Dominican Republic. Joanna’s first time bathed in this warm, cinematic light.
Amado knew this was the space for a secret proposal. He didn’t want fireworks or forced setups. He wasn't trying to perform for an audience.
He just wanted pure honesty. And to capture that exact moment so it would become timeless.
35mm photo on our way to capture Amado & Joanna Engagement in Samana, Dominican Republic.
The Setup of Nature
Organizing a proposal from another country requires a lot of trust. Amado fully trusted my creative direction. We wanted an intimate, nostalgic vibe with the texture of 35mm film, and Samaná was the absolute perfect canvas for it. Samaná has this wild, untamed greenery that crashes right into a deep blue sea. You don’t need much decor when nature is doing all the heavy lifting.
We picked a very minimalist spot on the beach. But the funniest part of the whole setup was our unexpected guests. The moment we stepped onto the sand, a pack of local beach dogs ran over, tails wagging, instantly demanding our attention. They basically became our unofficial welcoming committee. Their goofy, playful energy immediately set a fun, relaxed tone for the afternoon, taking away any nervous tension in the air.
The Proposal
The plan was simple. Amado and Joanna took a long, quiet walk down the beach just the two of them. To make sure the light and the backdrop were just right, I had actually shown Amado some hand-drawn sketches on my phone days prior, mapping out exactly where he should drop to one knee.
And he nailed it. When he pulled out the ring, Joanna’s reaction was pure, unfiltered surprise. There were no rehearsed poses, just raw emotion as she processed what was happening, the wind in her hair, and the sound of the ocean in the background.
The Portrait Session and the Unofficial Welcoming Committee
After they had their private moment, we started walking back along the shore. Caribbean weather does whatever it wants, and suddenly, the sky closed up. It looked like we were about to get hit by a massive rainstorm, but the rain never actually broke.
Instead, we got wind. A strong, beautiful wind that picked up Joanna’s dress and seemed to dance to the rhythm of their adrenaline. And of course, our furry friends decided they weren't done with us. The beach dogs came sprinting back, deciding they were officially part of the portrait session. They followed Amado and Joanna the entire way, running between their legs, stealing the spotlight, and giving us some incredible, hilarious photobombs. These are the imperfect, joyful details that make a gallery feel alive. You can't plan that kind of magic.
Special Moments
The climax of the day happened at the end of the beach. Their daughters were waiting for them. When Amado and Joanna walked up and shared the news, the excitement was incredible. We took advantage of that high energy to do a quick family session right there. Knowing this was the first time they were having professional photos taken all together gave my work that day a very special weight. Two families officially blending into one, with sand on their feet.
A Note for Couples Planning a Engagement in the Dominican Republic
If you are planning your wedding or a proposal and are looking for a Dominican Republic wedding photographer, my biggest piece of advice is this: leave room for the unexpected.
Whether you are getting married at a resort in Punta Cana, on the cliffs of La Romana, or on a hidden beach in Samaná, the best moments always happen when you let go of control. Let the wind mess up your hair, laugh out loud when a local dog runs into your frame, and just focus on the person standing in front of you. I’ll take care of capturing exactly how it all felt.
